The keel of Maritime Spatial Solutions was laid during the 2025 federal government shutdown. While furloughed from the United States Coast Guard, Captain Amilynn Adams was approached by a former colleague seeking spatial data expertise to support a project for New York City’s Economic Development Corporation. The work involved developing metes and bounds to support the proposed deauthorization of a portion of the Harlem River federal navigation channel to enable a public greenway project.
The technical complexity of the work, combined with the opportunity to apply deep maritime and spatial expertise to diverse client needs beyond a traditional and strictly maritime spatial data analyst role, proved too compelling to ignore.
Maritime Spatial Solutions LLC was formally launched on December 8, 2025 by Captain Adams, Founder and Principal Analyst. The firm draws on more than two decades of sea time accumulated over 24 years of active service in the NOAA Commissioned Corps and deep data nerd roots. Captain Adams holds an active U.S. Coast Guard Deck Officer license, and her operational understanding of vessel operations, waterways risk, and maritime commerce reflects a career that began with hands-on work as a deckhand and dockhand at a commercial fishing dock in Barnegat Light, New Jersey, and progressed through senior leadership roles at sea and ashore.
Captain Adams is an oceanographer by training and a certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP, Certificate No. 162458). Her professional focus centers on translating real-world maritime challenges into practical spatial analyses and data products that support informed, defensible decision-making within complex and evolving maritime data environments.
